No GM's Sky - Uncharted Worlds

And it's live! You can download NGS-UW from DriveThruRPG now. It's a freebie like all my games on DTRPG. (Feel free to leave something in the tip jar if you want.)

For those of you not familiar with NGS, it is a setting for exploration missions set on the frontiers of space. You do a long jump into unexplored space and then try to survive and explore your way back home. It is intended for solo/GM-less play, but it also usable by a GM that wants an easy to set up sand box. In addition, there is a big appendix with crew members, specialists, and patrons to flesh out your adventure.

Acquired. It looks like a nice little framework, and obviously would work with Traveller as well :)

I've been wondering how to use UW for exploration - the TV show _The Terror_ made be wonder if you could do a campaign setup based on the search for the Franklin expedition. But fundamentally I was stuck on the fact that space, at least as we understand it, is mostly pretty boring: rock, ice, gas giants, superearths and hot jupiters. And I was conceiving of most "exploration" as "drop automated exoplanet observatory, come back in a year or two to see what its discovered, spend a decade analysing the data to find the potentially valuable habitable worlds, and maybe pay them a visit". But even then, you can learn most of what you need to know from orbit, without having to actually set foot there - landing is only for the weird things, or if you're trying to get biologicla psecimens, or if you have a death wish.

Heh, the original NGS uses Traveller/Cepheus Engine. I try to present several reasons for going planet-side. Ruins, aliens, re-fueling (cracking water or ice for hydrogen), patrons with their agendas, conducting site surveys, replenishing stores, etc. You can totally play it safe, but you'll miss out on opportunities to earn extra pay for discoveries. The encounter questions also might force your hand if you need resources. Because it is highly random by design, you'll have to play to find out. :-)
